JACOB ATKINSON, PSYD, ATR
Dr. Jacob Atkinson PsyD, is a licensed psychologist in Idaho and a Registered Art Therapist with the Art Therapy Credentials Board. Dr. Atkinson utilizes both traditional talk therapies and creative art therapy techniques in working with people of all ages and with differing personal challenges.
Dr. Atkinson graduated from Nazareth College in upstate New York with a MS in Creative Art Therapies in 2007 and has been actively engaged in providing counseling services since. He has worked in non-profit and for profit behavioral health clinics and ran a private practice in Anchorage, Alaska. In 2016, he completed his doctoral work at Alaska Pacific University in Counseling Psychology (PsyD). After completing his required post-graduate training in 2017 he joined Treasure Valley Psychology.
During sessions Dr. Atkinson utilizes theoretical approaches which are positive and strength based; focusing on techniques which are most beneficial to the individual. In addition to traditional talk therapy techniques, he enjoys including creative art therapies to enhance the therapy session whenever possible. Creative art therapies may include the use of painting, drawing, sculpture, mask making, music collage, printmaking, writing, etc. Creative therapies utilize the healing process of creation and expression to help those in need. Additionally, creative art therapy techniques and processes are able to address experiences and evoke responses that traditional talk therapy may be unsuccessful at attaining. Jacob believes therapy takes work and courage. He sees his role as a guide and support in order to help each individual recognize and learn the skills needed to achieve their goals.
